QM Gallery Al Riwaq

What About the Art: Contemporary Art from China was an exhibition at QM Gallery Al Riwaq in Doha, presenting the work of 15 contemporary Chinese artists curated by internationally acclaimed New York based Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, during the Qatar-China 2016 Year of Culture.

Commissioned by Qatar Museums, contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang devoted three years to the curatorial research and development of the large- scale exhibition, returning to Qatar after a successful solo exhibition at Mathaf gallery in 2011.

The exhibition featured works by 15 living artists and artist collectives born in Mainland China: Jenova CHEN, HU Xiangqian, HU Zhijun, HUANG Yong Ping, LI Liao, LIANG Shaoji, LIU Wei, LIU Xiaodong, Jennifer Wen MA, SUN Yuan & PENG Yu, WANG Jianwei, XU Bing, XU Zhen, YANG Fudong, and ZHOU Chunya.

Their diverse bodies of work included painting, sculpture, installation, video, performance and interactive video game design.

As a key event in the Qatar-China 2016 Year of Culture programme, the exhibition received generous support from the China National Arts Fund, Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Shanghai International Culture Association.
